Sarah’s Story

"...no mother experiencing miscarriage or pregnancy loss has to go through it alone."

After becoming parents to our son in the middle of COVID lockdowns, we navigated his first year of life through uncharted waters.

‍

When we were ready to grow our family, the life of lockdowns was behind us and we assumed the journey to our second child would be straightforward, but that wouldn’t be the case. It took us longer to fall pregnant, but when I finally did, we were so excited.

‍

We happily shared the news with those close to us, but I went on to have a missed miscarriage. I didn’t know this was something that could happen this way, my body still believing the pregnancy was progressing but there was no heartbeat.

‍

After weeks of waiting for a miscarriage to naturally occur, and still working during this time, it never did so I had to have surgery.

‍

My heart felt like it was shattered into a million pieces, my mind clouded with the darkest thoughts. I had so much support from my husband, love all around me, but I still felt so alone.

‍

I was connected to Pink Elephants, and through their advocacy and peer support I started to feel less alone and learnt just how common miscarriage is.

‍

6 months later I fell pregnant again, this also ended in miscarriage.

‍

Not long after I was pregnant again and whilst we were so happy, at the same time we navigated fear and worry every single day, but this was our rainbow baby girl, born healthily and happily on boxing day.

‍

I still often think of those pregnancies, I’ll carry them with me always. I’m now proud to be an Ambassador for The Pink Elephants Support Network, with a hope that no mother experiencing miscarriage or pregnancy loss has to go through it alone.
