Ryan's Story

"I am the most important resource for my partner and my son"

Sponsorship for Perinatal Mental Health Week is not a funded arrangement; no financial contributions are exchanged as part of this recognition.

Our son was born on 7th July this year in our bedroom for our planned homebirth.

I am a new dad who experienced the challenges of supporting my partner with PNDA. My supporting role in the lead up to the birth, during and after has been made easier by utilising the training and guidance provided by the Prepared Dad Foundation and other services such as the Australian Breastfeeding Association Hotline and 2 private midwives from Mamatoto Midwives.

‍

The 3-week Prepared Dad course online helped me prepare for and understand the challenges my partner is experiencing as a new mother and it helped me understand that I am the most important resource for my partner and my son throughout the perinatal period.

‍

I learnt that although society has largely removed the idea that fathers can play a significant role in the birth of their babies, it is vitally important that we re-learn how much we are needed during this time.

‍

The Prepared Dad course used evidence-based concepts, research studies, experienced professionals and other dads to teach me what I needed to learn about birth and caring for my family. The course, its resources and the follow up support helped me prepare mentally and physically for taking on the responsibilities that a new dad needs to, to ensure the healthiest and happiest outcome for my family.
